The Meca

Belize

The Meca is a 45 foot powerboat designed exclusively to give anglers unparalleled access to the pristine coastal waters of Belize. This purpose built mother ship can keep 23 foot shallow water skiffs in tow and will accommodate 2-4 guests. You’ll be whisked away on the smaller boats each morning to some of the most remote locations in Belize filled with permit, tarpon, bonefish, snook, barracuda, jacks and snapper. The extreme versatility of the mother ship arrangement allows guests ultimate control in meeting their specific goals for the trip. Whether you’re looking to catch a vast array of species or simply want to focus on making your permit or tarpon dreams come true, a trip aboard The Meca will hook you up.

The ultimate mobility of The Meca allows the guides to react to changing weather, fish behavior, and the given desires of the clients. The mother ship allows the proximity of the flats skiffs to remain close to the fishing grounds. Runs of 10 minutes or less from a given anchorage is typical which maximizes fishing time and allows the guides to quickly adapt to changing conditions. Some mornings may be spent looking for rolling tarpon at the crack of dawn, or you may choose to sleep in with a leisurely breakfast and target bonefish through dusk.

Options are also available to venture outside of the protective reef and visit the Turneffe Islands, or make the run south to the permit rich waters south of Belize City. Opportunities abound to sight cast to cruising bonefish on shallow flats or sight fish to tarpon and permit over turtle grass beds. Blind cast the channels for 50lb– 100lb tarpon or fish the mangrove edges for snook, snapper and baby tarpon. Few Belize operations can give you the most control in determining your intended target species, react to changing conditions or offer a more customized experience perfectly suited to meet your goals as a trip aboard The Meca.

Fishing Program:
Anglers hoping to fish for a wide array of species can optimize their fishing schedule to target bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, snapper, jacks and barracuda. Other times entire trips are booked with specific attention paid to just permit or tarpon. By utilizing the flexibility of the mother ship, anchorages can be moved daily to put you on the best flats during the peak time of day.

Each morning you’ll depart from The Meca aboard one of two 23 foot shallow water skiffs outfitted with 40 horsepower outboard motors. Each skiff holds two anglers, the guide and features a secure casting brace on the bow. Each fishing day can be broken into three separate fishing sessions to match the goals of the anglers, plan for meals or adapt to changing weather and tide conditions. Most of the fishing is accomplished from the boat but wading opportunities are available depending on the location.

Instances of seasickness are unlikely as most of the fishing is done well within the protected waters of the barrier reef, which is the second largest in the world. The only open water crossing occurs with those choosing to visit the Turneffe Islands. A medical aid for seasickness may be a good idea if you or anyone in your group is particularly sensitive.

Accommodations and Meals:
The Meca has been designed and built with its role as a mother ship specifically meant for anglers in mind. Each air-conditioned cabin is private and features its own shower, toilet and sink. Hot water is not available for showers. The preferred protocol is to jump in, get wet, turn the water off, soap up and then a quick rinse.

The three (or four) person crew understands the importance of giving their guests “space” and has a knack for quietly disappearing. Available in the main parlor is a DVD player, VCR, stereo w/ CD player, and a large table for playing cards, fly tying, or just relaxing with a sunset cocktail.

Native fruits, seafood, fresh baked breads, and some traditional Belizean dishes adorn the menu and purified water is in ample supply. Meal times are customized to coincide with the needs of your party and fishing sessions. Some of the more productive fishing can occur very early or late in the day so dinner times may vary accordingly.

Soft drinks and a supply of Belizean beer called Belikan are also available and included in the package. There will be an opportunity to stop at a store after leaving the airport to pick up items that are not included with the trip including wine, additional beer or mix for cocktails (plan on using cash for all purchases made in Belize City). The store is closed on Sundays.
