Coyhaique, Chile GuidesChile
"If the dictionary defined “local fishing guide,” Juan Ramon’s picture would be there. Based on our observation, Juan’s knowledge of the waters, the geography and the weather conditions in a chronically unpredictable locale enabled his guests to consistently net more and bigger fish than anyone else. The consummate professional in every aspect of the job, Juan was also a perfect host whom we would not hesitate for a moment to recommend" The trout fishing around Coyhaique gives you a true taste of quality fly fishing and Chilean culture. Each trip is tailored to fit your needs, whether it is a day of Patagonia fly fishing on a spring creek or a week stay at a local B & B fly fishing and floating the beautiful rivers in the region. We work with outfitter and professional guide Juan Ramon Astorga to provide local fly fishing knowledge on some of the best trout waters surrounding Coyhaique. He and his Chilean fly fishing guides are talented, reliable, and personable who cater to anglers specific needs each day. Coyhaique is a fly fishing wonderland with endless options from floating the Simpson and Manihuales rivers to wading trips on the Emperor Guillermo, Ñirehuao, Huemules, Dove and various spring creeks, as well as lake fishing days fly fishing for large browns at nearby lagoons. Chile offers incredible dry fly opportunities for resident brown and rainbow trout. Anglers can enjoy both wading and floating opportunities throughout their stay.
Location: Fishing Program: Anglers are picked up each morning by the guide in their 4X4 vehicles and taken to the river. Your daily fly fishing location will dictate whether you wade or float in rafts the rivers. It is best to discuss your requests with your guide each day. Fisheries: Nirehuao: The Rio Nirehuao is perhaps the area’s most famous fishery. It is a mid-sized freestone wading stream renowned worldwide for its fantastic hopper fishing during mid-summer exclusively for wild brown trout. The lodge’s head guide Alejandro has guided this river for 12 seasons + and knows it like no one else. Fish average in the 12 -20 inch range but, those over 24” are present. Rio Paloma: The Rio Paloma begins in Lago Desierto and its semi–glacial turquoise waters run northwest until it meets the Rio Desague. This mid-sized freestone river is most commonly floated or fished using jet boats and provides fantastic dry fly and streamer action throughout the austral summer. Predominantly a brown trout fishery, the introduction of rainbows in the late nineties has proven to be a success. Trout from 14-23 inches are taken from the crystal, clear Paloma waters. Rio Azul: Located between Lago Azul and Lago Desierto, the remote Rio Azul is accessible by boat only. Flowing beneath the shadows of Cerro Castillo, it is probably one of the world’s most beautiful trout streams. Brown trout from 17-21 inches are quite common with larger fish available. Jet boats are used to access the river and anglers most often wade fish here. Rio Desague: The Rio Desague drains Lago Elizalde and runs for about five miles until it enters Lago Caro. Within this short stretch of river, browns and rainbows in the 17-23 inch class abound with many larger trophies lurking. Jet boats are used to access this remote and scenic dry fly fishery. Rio Mañihuales: The Manihuales has a little of everything including a lot of big trout! It is most often floated but, some good wade fishing is available on it very upper reaches. It has a healthy population of both Brown and Rainbow trout as well as a strong run of King Salmon. The Manihuales often surrenders fish well in excess of 20 inches during an average day with the Brown trout usually being the largest. This river has structure like no other and an incredible amount of prime holding spots making it a favorite amongst local guides. Rio Emperador Guillermo is one of the jewels of the area, with many pools and riffles loaded with hungry trout, averaging 12 to 16 inches. Other floatable and wadable rivers which fish well out of Coyhaique include the Mañihuales, the Toqui, the Boca de León, the Coyhaique, the Huemules rivers. Several spring creek options are also available in the remote ranchland areas near the Argentine border. Chilean Patagonia's highly productive stillwaters are where one has a real shot at a true trophy trout and definietly not to be overlooked. Juan Ramon has the area's still water fisheries dailed in like no one else and his list of favorites includes the incredibly productive lakes of the Cerro Castillo area. If you wish for a shot at that 10 lb trout of a life time, this would be the place and Juan Ramon will find a way to get you into a fish you'll be sure to never forget.
