Boca Paila Lodge

Mexico

Blue skies and nights filled with stars. A relaxing hide-away far from today’s crowded world. One visit to this Caribbean fly fishing wonderland will prove why Boca Paila Lodge sets the standard for international flats fishing. Boca Paila Lodge is a true saltwater fly fishing Paradise. And when the day winds down, cool drinks, and healthy food are waiting back at the lodge. For the fly angler Boca Paila is one of the very best saltwater flat fisheries in the Atlantic or Caribbean. A winning combination of fresh and brackish estuaries intermingling with a complex shallow-water reef system creates Boca Paila’s quintessential food-rich flats resource. Truly, this is Yucatan fly fishing at its’ best.

Location:
Boca Paila is south of Tulum, Mexico in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

Fishing Program:
The daily fly fishing schedule is flexible, so discuss your plan with the manager every day and review with your guide each morning. Most anglers take advantage of the best time to spot bonefish and permit on the flats, usually from 8:00AM – 4:00PM. Earlier and later, the sun angle causes a glare, making the fish difficult to see. In order to maximize time on the water, most
anglers request to have a boat lunch packed. The more leisurely option is to come in around noon, enjoy a full lunch in the dining room, and then head back out at your own pace, perhaps from 1:30PM – 4:00PM. Each day your guide will stock a cooler on the boat with soft drinks, beer and water. Six soft drinks or beers consumed on the boat are included in the package price. Feel free to offer the guide a soft drink, but lodge policy prohibits his drinking alcoholic beverages.

Guides: As a rule, anglers fly fish with the same guide for the week. The local Mayan guides are experienced but may not speak English well. Be sure to discuss any issues, special requests, or expectations with the lodge manager.

Non-Angling Activities:
Guests can enjoy walking a virtually deserted beach for a mile in both directions. Snorkeling is available along the Palancar Reef, which runs parallel to the shore. One of the most popular activities is a visit to the mystical Mayan ruins of Tulum perched atop a cliff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean (about a 40-minute drive north of the lodge). True Mayan ruins fans can visit Coba (30 minutes beyond Tulum) where, amidst dense jungle, another site is presently being excavated by archaeologists. Ocean kayaks are available for independent exploring.

Accommodations and Meals:
The lodge is situated on a narrow split between the Caribbean surf 60 yards to the east and the expansive lagoon and flats to the west. Guests stay in spacious duplex bungalows, each with its own private bath, nestled among stately palm trees and white sand beaches.

The kitchen opens for breakfast at 6:30AM. Lunch can be packed in the boat cooler and eaten on the water, or you can return to the lodge. Cocktail hour is at 6:00PM and dinner is served from 7:00 - 8:00PM, with fresh seafood a specialty. You may indicate special meal requests/dietary restrictions on the questionnaire and consult with the manager upon arrival. You will find the Boca Paila bar, which remains open all evening, to be fully stocked with most of your favorite liquors and a good selection of Mexican beers and wines. Tequila drinks are a house specialty. You may ask to see your tab at any time, and you will be presented with your final total at the end of your stay. If there’s a specific brand that you would like, please notify us at least 2 weeks prior to departure.
